Just released the summer of 2016, the new Hawke Sidewinder ED 10-50×60 rifle scope, with the abbreviation ED standing for Extra Low Dispersion glass. Not quite fully understanding the definition of Dispersion, a quick check on internet came up with this “In optics, one important and familiar consequence of dispersion is the change in the angle of refraction of different colors of light”.

That sounds all well but we were anxious to get the Hawke Sidewinder ED 10-50×60 in and have a look for ourselves, and I can say one thing for certain,  we like Extra Low Dispersion Glass! Brightness, clarity and color were outstanding at all magnification levels.

Hawke Sidewinder ED 10-50×60

With 50 power magnification, this scope excels for the long distance centerfire shooter and is exceptional at range finding for the airgun shooter. For the Field Target Airgunner, there are few rifle scope options on the market and those available come with a hefty price tag. The Hawke Sidewinder ED 10-50×60 comes to market at $999.99 (as of the writing of this post) making it the first sub $1000 scope in this class and this level of quality.

The Hawke Sidewinder ED 10-50×60 is going to come the new Hawke TMX reticle, illuminated by way of a rheostat  on the eyebell. Reticle line thickness was perfect for seeing in darker conditions but still thin enough not to cover the target.

The Hawke Optics TMX reticle was developed around the common Mil-dot spacing when the magnification is set to 20x (not the usual 10X on many other scopes). As with Mil-Dot spacing (the larger hash marks) equal a gap of 3.6 inches at 100 yards or 26″ (3 feet) at 1000 yards. The TMX reticle allows for large 8 mil spacing hold over as well as 3 mil spacing for windage.

Unique to the Hawke Sidewinder ED 10-50×60 are the inter-changable turrets (sold separately. This rifle scope will come standard with 1/2″ MOA click turrets but 1/8″ MOA as well as 1/10 MRAD are available. By simply unscrewing the locking collar, the turret can be removed from the scope and each turret has indexed teeth to ensure that alignment and location are kept.

The Hawke Sidewinder ED 10-50×60 is going to have a side focus for parallax adjustment that ranges from infinity all the way down to 10 yards. Included is a removable 4″ large side focus wheel. The wheel comes with yardage markings but the Airgun Field Target shooter will want to tape on their own as it lacks the single yard increments required, or most likely replace with a larger after market side wheel.
